Meet Catherine. Master of fine craftsmanship, quirky personalized design and creator of perfect paper goods by way of letterpress.
Catherine is the creative force and founder of Printerette Press – a boutique design and letterpress studio in Minneapolis. With an academic and corporate background in clothing design, she had a passion shift from fabric to paper with the help of an antique Heidelberg Windhill press. Her gem of a studio is a land where everything is hand-drawn and hand-lettered – and most importantly, it has the most vigilant and adorable shop dog, Moose.
I such have an affinity for her color palettes coupled with her hand-drawn goodness – especially her family portraits that are so fresh yet a bit nostalgic.
All of her charming designs aside, her infectious personality and passion had me wanting to hang out at her studio all day and chat design, local faves and the newest skill she’s learning – ballroom dancing!
Getting to know Catherine…
What is the favorite trend you are seeing right now?
I’m gravitating towards everything marble-geode-inspired. We did a particularly awesome wedding suite that was marbled and hand painted and I’m dying over it!
What is your current color crush?
Pinks! Soft and pretty to bright and obnoxious.
Right now, I can’t get enough of…my deck! I’m racing home from the studio every night to sit on it. Summer only lasts so long, you know?!?
What is your most treasured possession?
I have a t-shirt that was my Dad’s in college. He was a wrestler and it was part of his warm-ups. It’s the best kind of vintage weathered heather gray and I’m careful not to wear it too much so I don’t wear it out.
If you could get on a plane and go anywhere in the world tomorrow, where would you go?
I’d go to Nashville! I’ve got an embarrassing love for country music and the honkeytonks there are EVERYTHING.
Do you have a signature drink?
Rosé in the summer. Old Fashioneds in the winter.
What is at the top of your bucket list?
I want to learn how to sing and play the guitar – and then start an awesome band. Ha!
What is your dream project?
To open the coolest retail shop that has our print shop in the back and the coolest stuff in the front. We’d offer Printerette goodies plus all of the best from our friends.
What is the best advice you have ever received?
It’s a Theodore Roosevelt quote that I try to live by…”Comparison is the thief of joy.”
THIS OR THAT::
Bright colors or neutral tones | My work at Printerette is full of bright colors. My personal life is mostly neutrals.
Leather or lace | They’re both so good on their own and so good together!
eBook or paperback | Paper! Always paper. Long live paper!
Skydive or scuba dive | Both are terrifying!
Classic or modern | A mix of both.
Sunrise or sunset | I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen the sunrise so I can’t fairly say?!
Mountains or ocean | Oh, the ocean. No question.
Cake or pie | Rhubarb pie please!
Coffee or tea | I can’t do without an Americano with coconut milk every morning.
Paint or wallpaper | There is so much good wallpaper out there right now. If I had the energy, I would cover my whole house in it!
Pancakes or waffles | Waffles! I just at the Savory Waffle at Birchwood Cafe for lunch and am so happy.
Rural or urban | I need a good mix of both. I grew up in the city and live in the city but my extended family has a farm south of the Cities and weekends spent here are some of the best. Last summer during a particularly busy wedding season, I went down to spend time at the farm and gather myself. One night after dinner out of the porch swing my grandma asked, “Shall we turn off the lights, drink root beer floats and look at the moon?” To which I said, “Um..yes.”
What’s next for Printerette Press?
We’ve got awesome stuff on the docket! We’re cooking up new desk items like sticky note cubes, note pads, letter-writing sets and more. Plus, we’re looking into offering letterpress workshops so please stay tuned! Yay!
